Custom Made Diamond Design

The most challenging and pleasing aspect of the art is custom made diamond design (CMD), a single diamond design research, the highest level of diamond cutting. a quest for higher value goes through a [weight; clarity; sparkle; facet order] equation. every step of the way the cutters need to recruit their creativity, starting from the concept design, to measure the potential of weight up to the finale design.

There are six basic steps to CMD:

  • 3D Scan

  • Concept Design

  • Approximate Cut

  • Reanalyze

  • Redesign

  • Final Cut

But diamond designer's life are not that simple as virtual is not reality, usually after the first approximate cut, things look slightly different and reassessment is needed based on the new acquired data regarding clarity/structural problems. redesign of the early prototype design is necessary to fit the goal estimation or a new goal estimation. a secondary cut is done, following a reassessment on all aspects mentioned above and so forth... this process can easily repeat it self six to eight times if not more.

On the 27th of May 2005 a diamond firm asked me what can be done with the diamond bellow.

D color, high transparency, looks clean in the center, the length on the left side of the face below had salty cracks. being flat all I could offer on traditional cut was pear shape French culet at 3.7-4 carat or oval French culet at 3-3.5 carat.

After scanning the diamond with a Sarin system, I set out to find a better solution using ray trace technology, a technology I adopted as a diamond designer. few days later I returned with a cushion based 5 carat design.

My client took the above report to his buyer, got the ok and asked me to cut it. during the cutting process I encountered problems with the salty edge and started shortening the diamond from that side, much more than originally planed, but making sure to maintain my original design goals using ray trace technology manipulations thru computerized 3D tools which were built and/or customized for my needs.

On the 9th of June I delivered a 5.17 carat D flawless, 1:15 length/wide ratio, 43.5% total depth that had flashing colorful lights thanks to custom made diamond design techniques.
